When Sin Sizes You Up

You will hardly believe the story I am about to share.

When I speak to men about my implausible descent into the sexual underbelly of America, the first question asked is usually, “How in the world could you have possibly fallen so deep into sin?”

A Sears catalog.

Sneaking a look at the women’s lingerie section. Then it was Victoria’s Secret. Pretty soon it was soft porn from a magazine rack in the grocery store. Until finally…

I hit the red button on a pornographic movie in my hotel room when I was twenty-eight years old.

Two decades later, what started with a Sears catalog destroyed everything I held dear in life.

My good friend Rusty Gunn told me a true story that sent shivers down my spine.

There was a little girl named Abby.

Her father was a snake enthusiast. There were always pet snakes around the house. One day, Abby’s Dad gave her a baby python to be her very own pet.

As the story goes, Abby raised this infant python into adulthood… caring for it, feeding it… and yes… letting it sleep beside her on her bed each night.

Each night, this lovable reptile would curl up in a circle next to Abby’s warm body. They were becoming the best of friends for sure.

Then.... one night Abby woke up startled — finding her now rather enormous 8-foot python — laid straight out beside her from the bottom of the bed to the top.

She quickly jumped up and called for her Dad… wondering what in the world was it doing.

Her father had no idea, so he called one of his snake expert friends, and he explained this mystifying occurrence. Mr. Snake Expert replied, “You want to know what it was doing?”

“Please…” replied the father.

“It was sizing her up.”

Friends, there comes a day when our sin grows to a point in our life, when it starts sizing us up.

I remember contemplating what would happen to me if my sin was ever uncovered.

My friend, I can tell you this — the consequences were a thousand times worse than I ever dreamed of.

Oh….....  if only I would have had the courage to get help before I allowed sin to utterly destroy my life and family.

The Message version of James 1:15 reinforces the danger of lust left unchecked, “Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer.”

We are here to help... if this is you.
