The Friday Five |
Well, it’s time once again to lay down the “Friday 5.” This is a short and to the point collection of observations I have about life, the church and people.
This coming weekend, I am going to be sharing some of God’s thoughts on taking care of our body. This body that we have is much like a car. It is our transportation for our spirit and soul from one place to another. Like a car, it will run well and last a long time if it is properly maintained. So if we want our human odometers to get to the 200,000 mile mark, we are going to have to proactive in doing the right things physically.
I want to live a long full life so that I can be there for my family, my church and most importantly for the Lord, as I grow older. Here are 5 basic things that I try to practice in my life to keep my body healthy, fit and strong.
1. I have found activity and exercise that I actually look forward to each week. I hate just running like a mouse on a treadmill, so I play tennis and hockey. Find something you enjoy doing and do it every week.
2. I don’t diet. Rather, as I have grown older and weight seems to stay on easier, I have made simple lifestyle adjustments in my eating. I rarely have desserts, stay away from fast food and I have stopped drinking Coke… that was a tough one!
3. I lift weights. At first I hated this! But over the course of my commitment, [paid dues to a club, so the economist in me forced me to use it for at least the first month] I actually began to look forward to the process. Now I enjoy pushing myself to new levels and seeing the benefits of a leaner, toned body.
4. I have partners in the process. Of course, Cathy is my biggest cheerleader and encourages me along the way. My staff team are great guys to exercise with and keep each accountable in our food consumption!
5. I am realistic. I have no aspirations to be Arnold Schwarznegger… and I know from time to time I am going to fall off the wagon for a day or two… a week or two… and that’s ok, as long as I get back in the saddle again.
The Word says the our bodies belong to God. They are His temple… a place that He has chosen to reside in by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let’s honor Him and love Him with our entire being.. spirit, soul and body.
